By Design: Feedback Protocols in the Writing Classroom
Friday November 1, 2024 12:40pm - 1:50pm MDT
As Language Arts teachers we are often driven by the same enduring question: How might we design learning experiences and scaffolds that help to develop critical and creative thinkers who can take ownership of their learning? In the writing classroom, this question is even more pivotal!

This session will explore how we might:

  • reframe the feedback cycle such that we shift the cognitive load to our students through targeted conversations that are meditative rather than prescriptive in nature
  • scaffold peer feedback protocols to build student agency throughout the writing and revision process rather than at the end as part of an exercise on editing

Growing Writers for Life (7-12)
Friday November 1, 2024 2:05pm - 3:15pm MDT
Students of the Language Arts  are in an ongoing “dialogue” with texts of all kinds. In meeting them where they are in this vital work, we create essential conditions that help our students develop the skills and independence as readers and writers within and beyond our classrooms.
This session will explore some of the ways we might:
  • build low-stakes writing routines to include writer’s notebooks
  • leverage mini-lessons and mentor texts  to move writers.
